Ajuga Bugleweed Ajuga Reptans is herbaceous perennial native to Europe, northern Africa, southwestern Asia. Commonly called Carpet Bugleweed and Common Bugle is a low growing, evergreen perennial plant that forms a dense, mat-like groundcover, and the foliage is so dense that weeds have almost no chance of germinating. Ajuga Bugleweed seeds can be started indoors or directly outdoors. Carpet Bugleweed blooms with spikes of tiny, blue-violet flowers in spring and summer and its very attractive foliage features basal oblong or spoon shaped leaves which are dark green in color, but during the wintertime, the leaves develop rich bronze and burgundy tones. The large clumps of blooming Bugleweed produce a striking display and attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

Ajuga Bugleweed with its showy flower spikes and unique looking foliage adds color and texture to the shade garden, and in the mild winter zones, Bugleweed is very popular as an evergreen groundcover plant. Ajuga is one of the best compact flowering plants for planting in rock gardens, small spaces, and containers for all year around display. Ajuga Reptans seeds should be cold stratified if started indoors in winter. Carpet Bugleweed is a good choice for moist, shady areas of the landscape, and it grows well in areas too shady for grass spreading rapidly by runners. Ajuga Reptans thrives in partial shade and moist soil with good drainage and grows rapidly even in poor, heavy soils tolerating moderately dry areas.
