Cushion Spurge Euphorbia Polychroma is a herbaceous perennial native to central and southeastern Europe. Cushion Spurge seeds can be started indoors 6-8 weeks before the end of frost season and then transplanted outdoors, or once soil temperatures have warmed, Euphorbia Polychroma seeds can be started directly outdoors in a prepared seedbed. Cushion Spurge is the clump-forming perennial plant which typically grows in a dome, rounded mound that resembles a cushion, and in addition to the bright sulphur-yellow bracts that are exceptionally showy, the foliage turns from bright green to red in fall.
Cushion Spurge is great as an edging along a formal walk or garden path, or it can be mass planted as a general ground cover plant, and Euphorbia Polychroma is also works beautifully as a rock garden or border specimen. The plant is often planted on top of retaining walls for a unique visual effect, and Cushion Spurge makes a fantastic cut flower for various flower arrangements. In the cooler zones the plant grows well in full sun, but in southern zones some afternoon shade have to be provided for the best performance. Euphorbia Cushion Spurge grows best in average to poor, dry or moist, but well drained soils, and the established plant is very drought tolerant.
