Rush Swordleaf Juncus Ensifolius is one of the most attractive native wetland plants and flowering ornamental grasses. It is the best to start Rush Swordleaf seeds indoors in winter or spring before last frost and transplant the seedling into a permanent location. Also commonly called Starhead Rush, Dwarf Rush, and Daggerleaf Rush, Juncus Ensifolius is rhizomatous plant that grows in large upright clumps featuring sword shaped, similar to Iris leaves and blooming with attractive, round in shape, flower clusters of dark brownish, purple flowers that appear in mid-summer.
Rush Swordleaf is suitable for growing in marshes, wetlands, stream banks and wet meadow, and this native plant looks fabulous all summer long in moist borders or growing along the edge of a pond. Juncus Ensifolius seeds can be planted directly outdoors in fall, and the seeds germinate in 21-28 days. The established Daggerleaf Rush grows best in wet acid soil adapting to sand, lime, and clay.
