Lamb's Ear Stachys Byzantina Lanata is a herbaceous perennial plant native to Turkey, Armenia, and Iran. Lamb's Ear seeds can be started indoors in winter 8-10 weeks before last frost. Stachys Byzantina plant grows rapidly forming a low to the ground, 4-6 inches tall mat of thick, soft, velvet-textured, silver-gray leaves that looks fresh and crisp all season long. Lamb's Ear starts to bloom in summer and terminal spikes of tiny, purplish-pink flowers look magnificent densely covering the erect, 10-15 inches tall, small-leaved stems. The flowers attract butterflies and other pollinators.

Lamb's Ear is a very popular ground cover and accent plant because of its unique silver colored foliage and low to the ground growth habit. The plant is also often grown in rock gardens and along borders, and it is evergreen in mild climates. Stachys Byzantina seeds have to be just slightly pressed into the soil without covering and germination takes about 21-35 days. The established Lamb's Ear plant is drought tolerant, and well drained soil is essential for the best performance.
