Phlox Red Phlox Drummondii is one of the most known annual Texas wildflowers. Phlox Red seeds can be started directly outdoors after last frost or indoors before last frost. Commonly known as Annual Phlox, Drummond Phlox and Garden Phlox, Phlox Drummondii features medium green foliage with ovate, hairy leaves and strong, erect stems that are topped with clusters of fragrant, five-lobed, tubular, scarlet-red flowers. Red Phlox blooms all summer attracting hummingbirds and butterflies.
Phlox Red is popular for mass planting as a ground cover, along roadsides and walkways, in beds and borders, as edging, in containers and rock gardens, butterfly and hummingbird gardens. Phlox Drummondii seeds have to be covered lightly with soil, because the seeds need darkness to germinate, and the established Red Phlox grows best in full sun, and rich, sandy, well-drained soil tolerating extreme heat and some drought.
