Cress Curled Peppergrass Lepidium Sativum is a heirloom, annual herb that belongs to the Mustard family. Curled Cress seeds can be started indoors or sown outdoors throughout the entire season. The sprouts can be grown indoors through winter on blotter paper. Also called Garden Cress, this 1 foot tall herb is cold tolerant and easy to transplant. Curled Cress makes a good substitute for watercress in spring and fall. The entire Peppergrass plant can be harvested when it reaches 6-12 inches.
Cress Curled Peppergrass has ruffled leaves with a peppery and refreshing flavor, and its lacy looking young foliage and seedlings are used in salads, stuffing or as a garnish. Peppergrass's roots, seeds and leaves are used as a spicy condiment. Lepidium Sativum seeds can be sown thickly in spring and re-seeded biweekly for fresh greens, but the re-seeding has to be discontinued through hot summer weeks and resumed in late summer in light shade.
