Meadowfoam Limnanthes Douglasii is a hardy annual flowering herb that is native to the west coast of North America. Easily grown from Meadowfoam seeds this wildflower is also commonly called Poached Egg Plant, Douglas' Meadowfoam, and Fried Egg Plant. Limnanthes Douglasii grows fast and spreads quickly up to 30 inches per each individual plant creating a visually striking and attractive, low-growing, shiny, carpet of charming, scented, one inch across, clear-white with golden-yellow center, saucer-shaped flowers. The Poached Egg Plant flowers are showy and rich in nectar so they attract masses of beneficial insects including honeybees, butterflies, hoverflies, aphids, mites, mealy bugs and caterpillars.
Meadowfoam makes a wonderful annual flowering ground cover, and a dense, compact growing Poached Egg Plant can be found growing in flower beds, borders, path edges, patios, rock gardens, containers and pots. The plant is also can be used as a companion plant to crops and as a green manure, because this flower attracts pest predators such as hoverflies and ladybugs, thereby reducing pest problems in your garden. Limnanthes Douglasii seeds germinate in 2-3 weeks, and the established Douglas' Meadowfoam grows well in full sun or partial shade tolerating poorly drained clay soils.
